Halkidiki is probably one of the most famous areas of Greece. Halkidiki is a peninsula, southeast of the city of Thessaloniki (Greece’s second largest city). It is consists of three peninsulas: Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos.
Halkidiki (or “Chalkidiki as it is also known as”) is the large peninsula in northern Greece and located between the Thermaikos and Strymonikos Gulfs. Halkidiki is part of the periphery of Central Macedonia. Its capital is Poligiros located in the center of Halkidiki (69 km from Thessaloniki). Its closest airport is “Airport Macedonia”, near the city of Thessaloniki.
Mount Athos is situated at the third foot of the peninsula of Halkidiki. Mount Athos is an independent monastic state and has a large amount of churches and monasteries. It is an orthodox spiritual centre since 1054 and has an autonomous status since the Byzance. The area is forbidden to children and women and to even female animals. Mount Athos in Halkidiki is today inhabited by 1400 monks and there are 20 monasteries.
Tropical Beach Getaway
Halkidiki is famous for its beaches and also has the reputation to have some of the best beaches of Greece. The beaches remind tropical ones with amazing crystal-clear blue or turquoise waters and long white fine sandy beaches. Halkidiki is combining those paradisiacal beaches with incredible dense vegetation and forest. The most famous beaches of Halkidiki are Kallithea, Neos Marmaras and Vourvourou.
Besides the beautiful beaches, where all sports become a pleasure, there are a lot of archeological treasures and historical monuments too.
